AntiTesi in collaboration with the Superintendence for Cultural and
Environmental Heritage of Trapani,, is announcing a Call for Proposals for
Sound installations to present at Ex Stabilimento Florio delle Tonnare di
Favignana e Formica in Favignana island.
This call is connected to the Eighth edition of the Live!IXem festivals of
music, sound and electronic arts.
The aim is to highlight the works of those artists who, involved in an
experimental and creative exploration, use sound, integrating it with
electronic audio-visual and digital design for Art installations in specific
sites.
Another aim is to witness the new aesthetic in contemporary art through a new
way to conceive and carry out works within (or outside) of architectural
spaces.
In this regard, the spaces that will host this could not be more appropriate:
the former Florio Tuna factory on the island of Favignana in Sicily, the
largest of the Mediterranean, which takes its name from a family of
entrepreneurs that at the beginning of the twentieth century was the great
protagonist in Sicily, the Belle Epoque. The ancient structure located in the
largest of the Egadi islands, were obtained after the recent restoration of
museum space, a conference room with 400 seats and a guest room.

To make this call even stronger there will be a collaboration between
Live!iXem and OpenSound a platform that brings together seven European
partners to create a project for cooperation and exchange that puts the sound
in the middle of a series of outreach and artistic initiatives.

Open Sound is in fact a Grundtvig project for mobility and partnership in the
training supported by the EU through through the agency LLP - Life Long
Learning Programme. Thanks to this partnership, Sicily will be the first venue
where the festival will converge with some of the major representatives linked
to the European art scene and musical sound research. During the festival,
workshops will be conducted by some of the guest artists (the access to
workshops is free of charge): this will contribute to become familiar with the
locations of the former Florio Tuna factory on the island of Favignana.

SUBMISSIONS

We encourage proposals for site specific Sound Installations that will have to
be set up in one of the locations of the Ex Stabilimento Florio della Tonnare
di Favignana e Formica in Favignana Island Italy.
Subscription and participation to the call are free of charge.
It will be necessary to explore the locations through specific preparatory
visits during Live!iXem Festival 2011, from 8 to 11 december 2011.

15 minutes to 12: piéces pour la fin du monde

Vox Novus is calling for one-minute works for piano or works for piano and
electronic playback (tape) composed for 15-Minutes-of-Fame: Shiau-uen Ding
to be performed at the February 12, 2012 Composer's Voice concert in New
York City. The one-minute piano works are to be written specifically for
this project, which will be performed by Shiau-uen Ding. All works must be
60 seconds or less.

"15 minutes to 12: pi?ces pour la fin du monde": Fifteen one-minute works
for piano or piano and electronics are to be associated with the end of the
world in 2012, written specifically for this project for pianist Shiau-uen
Ding. No intervals for either hand should exceed an octave, except possibly
a minor ninth with one note on a black key (e.g. F#-G) , as well as a major
ninth with two white keys played by a thumb (e.g. F-G-G on the RH).
Electronics are optional, and are for one-track, fixed sound only.

Works should be submitted as PDF files in two formats; one as the published
score, the other without the composer's name for screening. A picture of the
composer, 50-word biography, and 50-word program note about the piece should
be submitted with works.

The newly renamed ensemble “a very small consortium” (previously known as the Chicago Miniaturist Ensemble, then “An Evening of Miniatures” at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay) seeks miniature compositions for performance during the 2011-2012 concert season. Our first concert will be Saturday, September 24th at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

All submitted works must be "miniatures." A work may qualify as a miniature in one of three ways:

the piece consists of 100 or fewer notes (with the definition of “a note” left to the discretion of the composer);

the piece is 60 seconds or less in duration;

the work is obviously based on a very limited amount of material (i.e., drones, small pitch collections, a single motif). Please keep our mantra “we do more with less” in mind if selecting this option.

We seek works that utilize the following forces in any combination or as soloists:

Vox Novus is calling for one-minute soprano solo composed for 15-Minutes-of-Fame: Beth Griffith to be performed at the September 25th, 2011 Composer's Voice concert in New York City. Hexagram Concordia will be hosting CLIEC 2011 – a one-day colloquium focused on live and interactive electroacoustic music, organized in collaboration with the Music Department.

The event will take place on Saturday, March 26th 2011 and will include paper sessions, a roundtable discussion, and an evening concert.

We are inviting artists and researchers to propose paper presentations and performances focusing on live and interactive electroacoustics and related issues, including artistic and technological innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, human-machine interface, laptop orchestras/ensembles, comprovisation, stage techniques, audience interactivity, aural and visual perception, related educational and pedagogical aspects, social and cultural contexts, and others.

SESSION FORMATS

The 2011 ALEA III International Composition Competition Prize

Composers of any nationality born after January 1, 1971 may participate. Only one composition per composer is permitted.

No entry fee.

Works of any aesthetic direction from 6 - 15 minutes in duration may be submitted. Works may be for solo voice or instrument or for an ensemble up to fifteen players. Available instruments are: one flute (doubling piccolo or alto), one oboe (doubling English horn), one clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), one saxophone (a, s, t or b), one bassoon, one horn, one trumpet, one trombone, one tuba, two percussion players, one harp, one keyboard player, one guitar, two violins, one viola, one cello, one bass, tape and one voice.

At the end of the concert one piece will be selected to receive the $2,500.00 ALEA III prize. The judges reserve the right to divide the award money or to decline to make an award.

Brass Initiative 2011 Composition Contest

We are looking for programmatic diversity and need new compositions in any style. The biggest criteria we will listen for in these submissions are melodic and commercial appeal. It can be intense, joyful, angry, mysterious - whatever you like. Please keep in mind that one of our primary goals is listener entertainment. There are some additional criteria:

Work must be a stand alone piece approximately 2-7 minutes in length or a multiple movement work approximately 5-10 minutes long.
Scored for horn, trombone, bass trombone, and two trumpets keyed in Bb or C. Eb and piccolo trumpet may also be employed as well as flugel horns. (Tuba may not be used unless pertaining to 2a below.)
1. Works written for ensembles larger than quintet will also be considered.
2. Works written for ensembles smaller than quintet will not be considered.
3. The addition of a rhythm section, (drums, bass, piano, guitar, or any part of that group would be a welcome addition.)
Works must be submitted no later than April 15th, 2011.

Manhattan New Music Project Call for Scores

The contemporary classical music website Sequenza 21, in partnership with Manhattan New Music Project (MNMP), is pleased to issue a call for scores.

Composers of any age may submit a single work with the following instrumentation: violins (2), viola, cello, piano, and percussion. Works for smaller groupings (solos, duos, trios, etc.) that employ the above instruments are especially welcome. In the interest of performing as many entries as possible, pieces that are shorter in duration may be preferred. Sound recordings may be submitted on a CD in MP3 format.

Several pieces will be selected from these entries for our 2011 concert in New York City (date/location TBA), performed by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble – ACME. The program committee will include Christian Carey (Sequenza 21), Clarice Jensen (ACME), and Hayes Biggs (Manhattan School of Music).

There is no entry fee. There is also no remuneration apart from the performance. Those composers selected for the concert will be responsible for their own travel and accommodations should they wish to attend the event.

Scores with CD recordings (if available) will be accepted at the address below until 5:00 PM on Monday, January 31, 2011. Please do not send parts at this time. Materials will be returned if accompanied by an SASE with appropriate postage.

Contemporaneous Call for Scores

In the spirit of keeping up with the music of now, Contemporaneous holds an annual Call for Scores open to composers of all ages and origins. We are open to a wide variety of instrumentations and can accept works with electronic components. While we may consider works that slightly exceed these limitations, we mostly accept works for the following instrumentation, including solos and subsets:

The Sixth International Jurgenson Competition for Young Composers

The Sixth International Jurgenson Competition for young composers has been organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, the Centre for Contemporary Music (Moscow) and Jurgenson Charity Foundation.

Open to: Composers born after 15 March 1975

The competition invites submissions in the following categories:

compositions for soloist ensembles or for voice and soloists (6-16 musicians);
string trio or quartet
compositions for marimba or percussion ensemble (up to 6 musicians).

Duration: 6 -15 minutes

The instrumentation for soloist ensembles could include: 1 flute (also piccolo, also alto), 1 oboe (also English Horn), 1 clarinet (also clarinet bass), 1 bassoon, 1 horn, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, percussions (2 musicians), 1 piano, 1 harp, 2 violin, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 double-bass.

Instruments in scores for percussion ensemble must be grouped by performers.

The competition will only accept compositions that are unpublished, and which have not been performed publicly. Applicant may not submit compositions in more than two categories.

According to the rules of Competition Laureates transmit the rights for publishing the composition which won to the Jurgenson Charity Foundation.

2011 4th UnCaged Toy Piano Call for Submissions: Toy Toy Toy!

The UnCaged Toy Piano Composition Competition is a call-for-scores to expand the music for toy piano. This competition was formed to encourage composers to write for this unusual instrument that has rapidly gained attention and interest from many pianists, composers and musicians. The toy piano has many ranges, shapes and sizes, but the standard concert instrument has a chromatic range beginning from the F below middle C (F3-F6). Made of metal rods instead of strings, the toy piano has a bell-like metallic quality that sounds nothing like the standard-sized "string" piano.

The theme for the 4th UnCaged Toy Piano is Toy Toy Toy! Music for Toy Piano and Toy Instrument(s).

Here are the rules for this year's competition:

Pieces written for toy piano and any toy instrument is strongly encouraged, but must be able to be played by a solo performer. Some of these toy instruments include (but are not limited to) melodica,toy drums, toy cymbals, toy gongs, two toy pianos, toy xylophone, or toy handbells.
Electronics is optional, but must work for a Mac OS X with an Intel processor
Pieces can be of any length
Pieces for solo toy piano are also acceptable

The UnCaged Toy Piano is open to composers of all ages and nationalities.

Unlike previous UnCaged Competition performances, the winning works this year will be performed at our 1st UnCaged Toy Piano FESTIVAL scheduled to take place in the Fall of 2011, New York City. The top selection will be awarded an honorarium of $800. Aside from this top prize, other winning works will be chosen to be performed as part of the festival and each composer will receive a studio recording of his/her piece. For the UnCaged Toy Piano Festival, other artists, musicians, composers, improvisers from New York and abroad will be joining in the Toy Toy Toy festivities!

For all scores that are sent to UnCaged Toy Piano, a copy of your score will also be sent to the Toy Piano Collection located at UC San Diego Geisel Library. In May of 2001, the Library of Congress issued a subject heading and call number for toy piano scores because of the activities at the library. Even if your piece is not chosen for the festival, we hope that your piece finds its rightful performer by being placed in an organized catalog of toy piano music.

The Esoterics announces an international call for a cappella choral scores— its annual competition for choral composition, POLYPHONOS, from the Greek πολυφωνος,” having many voices” or “manifold in expression”.

The Esoterics is dedicated to performing and perpetuating contemporary a cappella choral settings of poetry, philosophy, and spiritual writings from around the world. The purpose of The Esoterics’ POLYPHONOS is to encourage today’s choral composers to broaden the scope of the a cappella choral repertory by setting texts from beyond the Western classical canon so as to support a thriving choral repertoire reflecting the universal beauty and power of unaccompanied voices joined in song.

Each winning composer will receive a commission from The Esoterics to plan and compose a new choral work that will be premiered by the ensemble in 2012. In addition to this commission, each of the winning composers will receive $1000 US plus airfare and accommodations to attend the Seattle premiere of their commissioned work. There will be up to three POLYPHONOS awards:

Works by OM Fellows will be performed by the resident Other Minds Ensemble, in a concert in San Francisco on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. As the first opportunity in our new artist development programme, Embedded, Sound and Music is joining forces with the BBC Symphony Orchestra to create an opportunity for composers to work closely with the orchestra, developing their skills in writing for orchestra and for two composers to have new works premiered. Sound and Music announces a call for proposals from composers of up to age 35 at 1 September 2010 and of any nationality living in the UK or British composers living abroad.

This collaboration is a unique opportunity for composers to gain inside knowledge of working with players and conductors. The 12-month process will involve a workshop of initial ideas and sketches, which may be open to the public; a closed workshop on the further developed pieces; a final performance which will be recorded for broadcast on Radio 3’s Hear and Now.

Seattle Symphony Celebrate Asia! announces its first Seattle Symphony Celebrate Asia! Composer Competition. The Competition seeks to promote young composers who are interested in Asian culture, music and traditions.

In partnership with numerous local community groups, Seattle Symphony honors and celebrates Seattle’s Asian community with an annual Celebrate Asia! event. The concept originated in 2008, when local Asian leaders wanted to find a way to strengthen bonds with the broader community through a cultural celebration. Celebrate Asia! is part of Seattle Symphony’s Around the World series.

Seattle Symphony, presenting its 108th season, has been under the artistic leadership of Music Director Gerard Schwarz since 1985. Maestro Schwarz has led Seattle Symphony to international prominence, with more than 125 recordings, 12 Grammy nominations, 2 Emmys and numerous awards. Maestro Schwarz celebrates his Farewell Season as Music Director in 2010–2011, after which he will become Conductor Laureate. Newly named Music Director Designate Ludovic Morlot will begin his role as Music Director in the 2011–2012 season. The Orchestra performs in the acoustically superb Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle. The Symphony is internationally recognized for its adventurous programming of contemporary works, its devotion to the classics, and its extensive recording history. From September through July, the Symphony is heard live by more than 315,000 people.

Award and Performance
The winning composer will receive a $1,000 cash award and an opportunity to visit Seattle for the world premiere. The winning score will be performed by Seattle Symphony and conductor Carolyn Kuan on January 14, 2011, in Benaroya Hall at the annual Celebrate Asia! concert.

4. Works should be for orchestra or chamber orchestra with instrumentation no larger than 3333 – 4331 – T+3 – hp – kybd – str. Woodwind doublings are allowed.
Interested composers should submit:
- A legible, bound, full score
- A recording of the piece on a CD (midi-format is OK)
- A clear description of the composition’s Asian influence(s)
- A biography, with current address, e-mail address, and phone number
- If selected, professionally prepared parts will be required 60 days before the concert.

emp’óra is issuing a call for projects, period 2011-2012. It is aimed at composers and soloists or ensembles (instrumental and/or vocal) involved mainly in contemporary music.

In the text below, the performing part of the project is called ensemble (from two performers), but may be a soloist, and may incorporate electroacoustics. The pieces may also be of improvisational character.

Directions for entries of projects to temp’óra (must be followed to be considered) :

The project must consist of an exchange between, at least, three different countries. From these countries each ensemble will commission a piece from a composer of its own country.

The exchange is in form of a collaboration between these countries, so that each ensemble will play a programme including the new commission in the two or more other countries of the collaboration. The programme may be performed in one concert or consist of a tour. This part of the project takes place between 1st of September 2011 and 31st of December 2012.

temp’óra will pay a commission fee of €1000 minimum for each granted commission. temp’óra will not pay or have any expenses connected with the traveling, the accommodation or the payment for concert venues.

Special consideration will be given to projects which develop in their programmes the artistic and conceptual idea of exchange between countries in the world.

Hartford Opera Theater Announces “New in November”

Hartford Opera Theater would like to announce a call for scores for the exciting event “New in November”. The event will take place in Hartford, CT on the weekend of November 12-14, 2010 with a final performance on Sunday, November 14th. A total of five short operas will be learned, staged, rehearsed, and performed in the span of 48 hours.

Composers are asked to submit opera scores written for 2-3 singers, with at least one part written for a soprano or mezzo-soprano. Please note that scores with more opportunities for women will be more likely to be chosen for this event. The< operas may be no longer than 10 minutes in length, English only, and written for piano or a piano reduction. Material for librettos should be original, in the public domain, or if copyrighted permission must be submitted with the score. Each opera should require minimal sets and costumes.

Composers chosen to participate in New in November are welcome to attend the rehearsal period and should be open to minor revisions and changes. Please note that there is no remuneration for this project. In addition, the company is not able to provide travel or housing compensation for those composers who wish to attend rehearsals.

In cooperation with the International Gustav Mahler Society, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (RSO) and the Vienna Konzerthaus the Austrian Composer Society initiates an international composition competition on the occasion of the upcoming Gustav Mahler years 2010/11 (his 150th birthday, 100th anniversary of his death) and invites the composers of the 21st century without restriction of age to hand in their works for Orchestra.

An international jury will award three prizes. The selected works of this competition shall be staged and heard in as many "Mahler-cities" as possible together with selected examples from Gustav Mahler's oeuvre. For the fact that the winning pieces will be premiered by ensembles and artists of highest internationally reputation such as Marijan Lipovsek or the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (RSO) no prize money will be awarded.

Terms of participation:

No specific reference to Gustav Mahler is demanded, however the submitted works should be clearly inspired by Mahler's modernity and his far reaching influence on the musical development in the 20th century and they should be in the best meaning innovative and forward-looking. The submission of one or more work(s) needs to be done anonymously in such a way that the author's name does not appear on the score material, but can be retrieved from a sealed envelope incl. his/her name, address, phone number and email address as well as his/her artistic curriculum vitae (and a photo). The new Canadian chamber group Ansae is programming a concert of compositions for their particular ensemble in the fall of 2010. These works must be scored for the quintet’s unusual combination of flute (doubling piccolo), oboe, saxophone (sop/alto/tenor/bari), piano, and alt. keyboard (electronic keyboard, melodica, toy piano, or combination of the above). Structured improvisation and extended techniques are permitted and encouraged.

The quintet, made up of senior students and alumni of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Composition and Improvisation programs, are all experienced performers of new music and avid improvisers. They have worked collectively with Charity Chan, Linda Catlin Smith, Glenn Buhr, Kathryn Ladano and others; this will be their third year performing together. Their first performance as an exclusive ensemble was in April 2010, performing pianist Andrew Mellanby’s “Resonances” on a recital of his compositions and improvisations.

Every work will be read and recorded and sent to the composers. As many new works as possible will be performed live in-concert in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be aged 30 or under on the date of submission.
The work should be no longer than 20 minutes in duration.

Now in its thirteenth year, the VocalEssence & American Composers Forum Welcome Christmas Carol Contest provides composers of all ages with the opportunity to compose a modern-day carol, celebrating the holiday tradition in their own unique way.

This year, the contest seeks carols for SATB chorus accompanied by handbells (3-5 octaves).

Winning composers will receive a prize of $1,000 and will have their carols premiered at the VocalEssence Welcome Christmas concerts on December 4, 5, 10, 11 & 12, 2010. The performances will be recorded for a 2011 national broadcast via American Public Media.

ContemporarY Ensemble (CYE) challenges you to write for an exciting ensemble!

CYE is an open ensemble focusing on contemporary music and has the ambition to develop new ensemble forms through unusual combinations of instruments.

Composers are invited to write new works for three odd quartets, as well as open pieces for an unspecified ensemble. To our premiere concert in November 2010 we are looking for new pieces of music!

The composer has four options and it is free to choose which group he/she wants to write for. All four instruments in the selected group (Option I-III) should be represented.

The School of Music of the University of Minnesota is pleased to announce the 2010 Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize, a National Competition for New Works for Mixed Chorus.

The generosity, vision and abiding interest in music as a living art on the part of Craig and Janet Swan have come together in the establishment of an annual competition for music for large ensembles, the Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize. This competition, underwritten by the Swans, is administered by the School of Music at the University of Minnesota, where Dr. Swan served as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

The competition is held in a continuing three-year cycle of music for Chorus, Wind Ensemble, and Orchestra in rotation.

2011 Wind Ensemble: prize of $2,000

The single prize-winning work will receive a monetary award, and its world premiere by the appropriate large ensemble of the School of Music University Singers. Slated for release to coincide with a forthcoming multi-museum exhibition entitled Speed Limits sponsored by the FIU-Wolfsonian Museum (Miami Beach) and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA, Montreal), works submitted for publication consideration to the audio Speed Limits project can address one or more of the following issues with respect to speed: pace, traffic, construction, efficiency, motion, and mind+body.

Utrechts Blazers Ensemble Call for Scores

The Utrecht Wind Ensemble ("Utrechts Blazers Ensemble") issues a Call for Scores. The UBE focuses on playing modern classical music and therefore finds itself in a unique place among Dutch student ensembles. Even though this niche is not always appreciated by the large public, the members are not afraid to choose for challenging and original programmes. The UBE considers it important that new music has a place in Dutch (and student) musical culture. With this Call for Scores we would like to gain access to a new musical reservoir and play works of the next generation of composers.

Destellos Competition 2010

The Foundation Destellos , call for works for the Third Competition of Electro-acoustic Composition, open to composers and artists of any nationality, up to 50.

The objectives of this competition are the promotion and development of the artistic creation in relation with new technologies. Likewise, it is an intention of the Foundation Destellos to stimulate the creativity of the young generations of artists and to provide to them new routes of diffusion of their works.

The first prize will be attributed by Destellos and will consist of 500 American dollars and a residence of study of Mar del Plata (Argentina).

The second two prizes, consisting of paths collections of CD of electroacoustic music, will be granted for:

3. Will be accepted works of electro-acoustic music with video, up to 6' duration. The work must follow an abstract esthetics and to be interrelated in musical and visual languages, either in their technical and esthetical characteristics. In case of works in collaboration the prize will be considered ex-æquo and the authors will have to determine a representative to receive it.

4. Are excluded pieces using instruments, live electronics and improvisations.

5. Each candidate can send only one work, not been edited or prized before.

6. The participants will have to register before, sending for e-mail the attached form due completed by computer. Manuscript forms will not be accepted.

MrMcFall’s Chamber Call for Scores

MrMcFall’s Chamber, in association with the Scottish Arts Council, is pleased to announce a

CALL FOR SCORES

Scottish-based chamber ensemble, Mr McFall’s Chamber, is looking to commission four settings of English poems and one extended four-movement setting of English poems from young composers aged 30 and under. The commissioned works will become companion pieces to Gavin Bryars’ ‘Eight Irish Madrigals’, and will be scored for the same unusual combination of soprano, tenor, two violas (or violin and viola), cello and double bass. The chosen works will be performed alongside Bryars’ ‘Eight Irish Madrigals’ by Mr McFall’s Chamber during 2011.

Interested applicants should submit an existing example of their work by 30^th April 2010, to be reviewed by the panel. The piece submitted should be one which includes a part for voice (or voices) and at least two instrumental parts. The reviewing process will be completed by 1^st June 2010, at which point four settings of English poems will be commissioned from the four composers chosen. The four chosen composers will each receive a commissioning fee of £500. They will be performed together early in 2011.

One of the four composers will then be chosen and commissioned to write three further settings to make a four-movement piece (one movement of which would be their previously written individual movement). This chosen composer will receive a further fee of £1,000. This resulting four-movement complete piece will be performed during the summer or autumn of 2011.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be aged 30 or under on the date of submission (30^th April 2010)
The submitted score should be no longer than 15-minutes duration.

Non-Cochlear Sound

OVERVIEW

Non-Cochlear Sound describes a form of sonic practice not primarily concerned with the ear. Marcel Duchamp’s famous call for a non-retinal visual art was answered (eventually) by minimalism, conceptual art, social-based practice, and a host of approaches that appeal not to the eye, but to other concerns. In his new book, In The Blink Of An Ear: Toward a Non-Cochlear Sonic Art, artist and theorist Seth Kim-Cohen asks why sound has been slower to make the conceptual, linguistic, and social turns. As a way of responding to this question and of “redressing” this perhaps unfortunate sonic situation, we seek sound work that engages any or all of the following: sociality, conceptualism, politics, textuality, discursivity, subjectivity, history, economics, or philosophy.

CRITERIA

Major criteria for artist participation is:

Artists working with sound (although the work can include other materials and media as well)
Work that engages concerns beyond hearing or the senses in general
No history of previous exhibition, performance, or recording is required

Process Festival Call for Proposals

PROCESS Festival Berlin is now accepting proposals for performances and new-media work, to be shown at our 2 day festival in mid-March 2010.

The Festival seeks to highlight new and compelling work in the field of generative or process music - focusing on sound pieces which are inspired by or emulate algorithms, biology, or other defined systems.

From scores generated from nature (Mamoru Fujieda's "Patterns of Plants") or mathematics (John Cage's "Sonatas and Interludes"), to interactives which allow users to create music (Brian Eno's Bloom for iPhone) or a system as simple as 2 tape recorders ("It's Gonna Rain" by Steve Reich), this space has enjoyed a compelling history.

As well as the traditional execution of code outputting music, we're also interested in projects which expand the definition or approach to this field. This could, for example, including hardware-based projects like custom instruments, more lo-fi, organic systems, or hybrids such as a string quartet playing a generative score.

Web-based new-media projects will be shown onsite via a Macbook with wireless connection, as well as linked via the festival website. Performances should be between 20 and 40 minutes long, to allow a diverse selection of pieces over the festival period.

We're unable to offer artist compensation or provide travel costs to the event, although composers outside of the Berlin area are encouraged to partner with local artists to perform works. Please contact us if you're interested in this avenue.

CALL FOR SCORES: Cadillac Moon Ensemble "On the Road"

Cadillac Moon Ensemble announces a call for scores for its upcoming season.

With its unique instrumentation of flute, violin, cello, and percussion, Cadillac Moon Ensemble is redefining a "quartet" of the traditional sense while maintaining the artistry of chamber music within the new music realm. CME is dedicated to premiering new works which explore the roles quartet members as well as extended techniques and innovative ideas in composition.

If selected, we will perform your piece in New York City in our 2010/2011 season.

Instrumentation: the concept of this call is for a New York-based ensemble traveling on the road, or even to a concert on the subway. We are looking for pieces for flute, violin, cello, and suitcase percussion.

All percussion instruments must fit into a suitcase. A list of instruments is as follows: two egg shakers, one 14" cymbal, two bongos, three cowbells, three wood blocks, one tambourine, one triangle, pair of claves.

Eligibility: Any composer, regardless of age or nationality.

Awards: First Prize cash award of $1000 and second prize cash award of $500 plus performances by the University of Illinois New Music Ensemble in November of 2010 at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Additional awards and performances may be given at the discretion of the judges.

Judges: A panel of judges consisting of University of Illinois music composition faculty members will select the winning compositions. The winning composers are expected to attend the award concert/reception and will be responsible for their transportation costs (the competition will provide a stipend for lodging). The winning composers will assume full responsibility for providing adequate performance materials upon request.

Guidelines:

Medium: Full scores of any style or aesthetic direction for one to fifteen performers (including vocalists) may be submitted. Works for tape, electronics and/or mixed media with or without instruments/voices are eligible.

We dedicate Zeppelin 2009 – Sounds of Power / Listening to Fear to thinking about issues that have been insidiously encircling us for some time. We are concerned about signs that might suggest we’re going backwards in terms of hard-won social and intellectual achievements and freedoms. . . .

We invite people interested in sound to think about these questions and send us their sound works. The pieces will be played through a system of eight loudspeakers on 10, 11 and 12 December 2009 at the Barcelona Centre for Contemporary Culture.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

All works received will be accepted provided they meet the following conditions:

1. Pieces should be NO LONGER than ten (10) minutes.

2. The format for the pieces should be WAV or AIFF at 44.1 kHz and 16 bits. Pieces may have up to eight tracks. Each track should be in a separate file (so a piece with eight tracks should have eight files each containing a single track).

Futura 2010 Call for works

For its 2010 edition, the Futura festival is looking for fixed media works (acousmatic music, musique concrète, video art, hörspiel, etc.) around the ‘travel diary’ thematic.

The sent works may be ‘real’ diaries, elaborated with sound takes and/or recognizable images, but these diaries may also be ‘abstract’, without any identifiable sounds, concentrating only on remaining traces, impressions. The works evolving between these two poles are also, indeed, welcome.

It is all about drawing a large and original view of the ‘travel diary’, which is not only a journey in a geographical space, but rather the expression of an experience or a view on the surrounding world. As such, it is not absolutely necessary to have crossed back and forth the whole planet to submit a proposal, obviously travels are also metaphoric. It can be expressed through very diverse aesthetics and forms.

Nonetheless, we are not looking for ‘raw’, ‘objective’ soundscapes or field-recordings. To the contrary, we would like to program subjective works, and place at the centre of this thematic the perception of the traveller-composer-artist.

The submissions:

- The limited number of submissions is 2 works by composer, excepting works with video which amount is not limited.

- Only sonic works on tape medium should be submitted (acousmatic/concrète, radiophonic art…). Please do not send proposals for live electronics or performances.

- Preference is given to stereophonic music (multiphonic works may be accepted, but always if a stereo mix is provided for the selection process).

- Works including video are also encouraged.

The Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) is pleased to announce the 2010 ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Composer Commissioning Program.

The ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commissioning program commissions new electro-acoustic compositions from student composers. The purpose of this program is to stimulate student participation in SEAMUS activities, and to encourage young composers to pursue creative endeavors in electro-acoustic music. The program is administered by SEAMUS and funded by Frances Richard and the American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

Eligibility You must be a student currently enrolled in an academic course of study that leads to a high school diploma, or baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree in music or electro-acoustic music, or a program that includes electro-acoustic music and related fields. This competition is open to student members of SEAMUS who are United States citizens or legal residents of the United States and students enrolled in an academic course of study within the United States.

The Jerome Composers Commissioning Program (JCCP) supports the creation of new musical works by emerging composers, composer/performers, improvisers and sound artists. JCCP helps towards the cost of the creator's commissioning fee. A composer applies in conjunction with a performing organization (which may be any soloist or group, not necessarily a non-profit organization). Alternatively, composer/performer/improvisers who play in their own work apply in conjunction with a venue or presenter (e.g., school, theater, gallery, festival, etc.).

JCCP welcomes applications in all musical genres, including jazz, experimental, classical, improvisation, sound-art and international styles, and seeks to expand new-music culture beyond the traditional settings.

Composers residing in Minnesota or in the five boroughs of New York City may apply with performers based anywhere in the world. Composers residing elsewhere must work with Minnesota-based partners and present the work in Minnesota. Similar geographic restrictions apply for composer/performers applying in conjunction with a presenter. All applicants may also consider forming a consortium to include Minnesota participants.

Welcome Christmas Carol Contest

Since 1998, ACF has partnered with Minneapolis-based VocalEssence

on the annual Welcome Christmas Carol Contest. Each year the contest seeks new carols for chorus with a variety of instrumental accompaniments. This year’s call is for carols scored for mixed chorus and viola.

Two composers are selected annually as the winners of the competition. They receive a $1000 prize and their carols are premiered at the VocalEssence Welcome Christmas concerts in December. These concerts have been recorded for regional broadcast on the network stations of Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), and distributed nationally by American Public Media.

The application deadline for this year’s competition is August 21, 2009 (postmark). Eligibility: Composers of all ages whose permanent residence is North America.

Hope Wechkin and Washington Composers Forum present a call for scores for soprano and violin (one performer). Chosen music will be performed on a concert in Seattle with date TBA.

ABOUT THE PERFORMER

Hope Wechkin is best known to Seattle audiences for innovative and virtuosic pairings of the voice and violin. Her recent show Charisma featured such a pairing, and was presented at ACT Theatre. A well-known interpreter of contemporary vocal literature, she has premiered many works by Northwest composers and is the soprano soloist with Affinity. In 2006 she performed George Crumb's Ancient Voices of Children for Seattle Symphony's Made in America festival, and she has appeared with the Contemporary Opera Lab in Winnipeg, Canada. She has also appeared as a soloist with The Esoterics, the Pacific Chamber Ensemble, the Northwest Chorale, and others. A graduate of Yale University and the University of Washington School of Medicine, Ms. Wechkin has studied with Thomasa Eckert, Marianne Weltmann, and Nancy Zylstra in Seattle, and with Josephine Mongiardo in New York.

ELIGIBILITY The call is open to the general public.

SUBMISSION Composers may submit multiple scores for soprano and violin (one performer). Scores may be of any duration. Previously performed works are welcome, but the performance history of the work must be included. The performer will adjudicate the call, and may choose not to perform any of the submissions. Submission packets must be received by May 4, 2009 and contain the following: 1) Performing score(s). Duration and page numbers must be clearly indicated. Scores must be marked with a pseudonym. 2) Contact information envelope containing name, address, phone number, email address and pseudonym. The Esoterics announces 2009-2010 POLYPHONOS Competition (Reminder)

The Esoterics announces an international call for a cappella choral scores - its annual competition for choral composition, POLYPHONOS, from the Greek πολυφωνος, having many voices or manifold in expression.

The purpose of The Esoterics' POLYPHONOS is to encourage today's choral composers to broaden the scope of the a cappella choral repertory by setting sacred and poetical texts found beyond the Western classical canon in order to create a repertoire of choral concert music that reflects the universal beauty and power of unaccompanied voices joined in song.

There will be up to three POLYPHONOS awards, and each winning composer will receive a commission from The Esoterics to plan and compose a new choral work that will be premiered by the ensemble in 2010. In addition to this commission, each of the winning composers will receive $1000 US plus airfare and accommodations to attend the Seattle premiere of their commissioned work.

Electroacoustic Audio-visual Music

This is a call for fixed media electroacoustic audio-visual music works exploring the interaction between sound and image. Works should be cohesive audio-visual entities and not just video/film with a soundtrack or music with a video/film track. The audio within these works should be electroacoustic in nature.

Works are requested for a PhD research project investigating audience reception of differing styles of audio-visual composition and the role of composer intention in facilitating audience reception of electroacoustic audio-visual music works. This research builds upon the foundations laid by Leigh Landy and Rob Weale through the Intention/Reception Project (Weale 2006) (Landy 2006).

Works will be presented to a series of audience groups who will then complete questionnaires and discuss their reception of each of the presented works. Results from these tests will then be analysed in order to discover any trends that exist between the different audience groups.

It is hoped that this analysis will form a useful resource for composers of electroacoustic audio-visual music works providing key information on how audiences perceive and receive their works. The research will also provide fruitful information concerning the accessibility of these types of works.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

In this phase of the project, submissions must be fixed media works (as opposed to 'live' performance based works).
Works must have stereo audio and be for single screen.
The duration of submitted works should be no longer than 8 minutes due to testing practicalities or, alternatively, a well-defined self-contained section of the work lasting no longer than 8 minutes can be identified within the entire work.
Composers must be willing to complete a 'Composer Intention Questionnaire' outlining dramaturgic information relating to each submitted work.
The composer should own all rights to the submitted works and provide the researcher with the right to include selected works as part of future scholarly publications of the research.
Multiple works may be submitted.

NB: Works of high reputation may be rejected for testing due to issues of familiarity.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

All submissions must consist of the following:

DVD containing the work to be considered (PAL or NTSC format) and or QTM file. Works should have stereo audio and be for single screen.
Programme notes (please include duration, year of creation and a list of previous performances).
Composer biography.
Contact information: email, postal address and telephone.

All requested information must be provided in order for the work to be considered.

DEADLINE

Only submissions received by (or postmarked) Friday 20th February 2009 will be considered.

Composers of selected compositions will be notified by 31st of March at the latest.

A 'Composer Intention questionnaire' will be dispatched to the appropriate contact address for completion by the composers of selected works. Failure to complete a copy of the questionnaire for a selected work will prevent the work from being used in the study.

Noisy Nights are the Traverse's new music nights - performed by the newly-formed professional Red Note Ensemble.

The first Noisy Night is in the Bar of the Traverse Theatre on Monday 23rd Feb 2009. A general call for scores, maximum length 5 minutes each, instrumentation Vn / Cl (BCl) / Trb / Vibes is made. Possibilities Explored: Call for Recordings of New Works

The essence of college radio is the ability to explore the possibilities of radio for students. With this in mind, the classical music program on WRSU 88.7 FM (www.wrsu.org) is looking for recordings of new completed works for an ongoing series during a weekly broadcast that will begin in the Spring of 2009. Ideally, works should broadly be in the spirit of exploring the possibilities of music.

There is no deadline for submissions.

Guidelines

Works may be in a variety and instrumentation (including electroacoustic works)
The only requirement for recording quality is that it is representative, in the composer's mind, of the work. The recorded performance can be a professional recording or a reading of the work.
A short biography of the composer, a synopsis of the work, and the performers on the recording is required and will be read over the air.
Works may be of any length under a half hour. Excerpts of a work will also be accepted.

There is no award for works played during the series. Prior to being played, the composer will be given the date and time the work will be aired. A future website for the series will also identify the composer and work as being a part of the series.

Submissions will only be accepted electronically in mp3 format to douglas.laustsen@gmail.com If the work is accepted, an uncompressed version of the audio will be requested for airing.

The University of Minnesota West Bank Arts Quarter, Collaborative Arts Program (COLA), and American Composers Forum are proud to present the 2009 Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Arts, February 17-22. The festival will be held on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota (USA) and neighboring Minneapolis performing arts venues, and will feature numerous guest artists to be announced.

MUSIC SUBMISSIONS

Music submissions will be accepted in seven categories:

Concert Hall works: Interactive works for acoustic instruments and electroacoustics (performance forces are available, TBA) and electroacoustic works with and without performers. Performance venues will accommodate 2-8 channel works and works with video. Although there is no strict limit of duration, pieces of fifteen minutes or less are strongly encouraged. This year, Spark encourages submissions of works for electronics with one of the following solo instruments: trumpet, tenor (voice), percussion (marimba especially), or violin. Additionally, the Renegade Ensemble, a local ensemble consisting of 2 percussion, 2 piano, clarinet (Bb, bass, etc), mezzo-soprano, cello and flute will perform several works. Other instruments and ensembles are possible. And, as always, bringing one's own performer(s) is highly encouraged. Note: Although some "tape music" will be programmed, Spark generally favors works with live performers or other visual component. Some accepted "tape" works may be choreographed. Please indicate if you do not wish to be considered for this.
Pub/Club works (aka Spark Nightlife): Experimental electronic performances in a "club-style" venue. Performers of various styles will be considered, including those influenced by IDM, hip-hop, glitch, jazz, etc. Selected performers will be given sets of 15-45 minutes. Performance venue will accommodate stereo sound and video. Please note that this venue is literally a pub—It will be a loud place. If your work requires a quiet atmosphere, please submit under the Concert Hall or Ambient Room category.
Ambient Room works (aka Nightlife/Ambient): Experimental electronic performances in a coffeehouse or club lounge venue. Works of any aesthetic approach are welcome, but ought to be "quiet" music. Please note that this venue will be a public establishment, not a concert hall, and thus listeners may converse during performances.
Installations: [See "Art Works" above]
Music with video [See "Art Works" above for general parameters, but also note that this year we ask submitters to specify whether the work is a video piece or a music video piece and these will be judged by separate juries.] Music with Video may also be submitted in either the Nightlife category or Nightlife/Ambient category.
Special Submission Category: "Homemade" instruments showcase. We encourage submission of proposals for short (15 minute) talk/performances to explain and demonstrate custom-made instruments. New York Miniaturist Ensemble

CEMVA 2008 2nd. Electroacoustic Contest 2008

The works submitted shall be recorded electroacoustic pieces, composed in studio, projected by loudspeakers in concert with the intervention of no live sound sources. They may include a maximum of eight channels and should have duration of between 07 and 20 minutes. The competition is open to composers of any nationality, aged no more than 40 years on 31/12/2008, each of whom may submit only one work: which must not have been commercially published or awarded a prize in any national or international competition.

The entries shall be sent in stereo version (support: CD), as well as a copy of the original multi-channel version in the case of works with more than two channels (in this case the works shall submitted only in CD-R/DVD-R with the audio files corresponding to each of the channels: SDII, AIFF or WAV format.

The works entered shall be identified only by their titles, on pain of disqualification, and shall be sent until 30 September 2008 (by registered mail, the date being determined by the post mark). Entrants shall attach to each copy of their composition a closed envelope, bearing only the title of the composition, and containing the details required to identify the composer with a proof of nationality and age, together with contact information, also send a short biography, a brief description of the work and digital picture of composer: JPEG or TIF formats. Is important shall be sent this rules agreement printed and signalled by the proponent. The materials submitted, as entries to the competition shall kept in Conservatory Library tutored by the Contest sponsors.

Revolutionary Sound - call for soundworks

Radio Papesse, in collaboration with the Festival della Creatività (Florence, Italy) - is inviting radio producers, composers and sound geeks to submit compositions and soundworks on the theme of revolution and its sonic dimension. Which is the sound of revolution?

Revolutionary Sound is part of FreeQuency, a special project within the Festival della Creatività, dedicated to those radios that have played a key role as tools of community strangle and communication in conflicts and revolutions. An exhibit within the festival as well as a meeting point for the debate.

Revolutionary Sound invites to reflect on those movements and people who have fueled winds of change in political, economical, social, cultural, musical and religious contests. We will prioritise narrative, inedited works that use archival materials. The pieces we will love the most will be selected and publicly broadcasted on Radio Papesse and at the exhibit venue during the days of the Festival. They will also enter into the Radio Papesse sound archive. The winner of the contest will also partecipate in the panel, organized by Radio Papesse, on sound archives and their use and re-use in sound art and radioart.

Grants from $500 to $2,000 are made to performers to play a work at least three times during an 18-month period. Awards support rehearsal and performance costs, so that performers may connect with a composer whose work they have not previously performed. Grant amounts vary according to the duration, difficulty of the work, and the number of performances proposed. As a rough guide, a soloist may receive $500-$1,000, a chamber group (3-8 performers) $1,000-$1,500, and a larger ensemble $1,500-$2,000.

Vox Opera Call

All members of the jury make recommendations based on the following criteria:

The work defines itself as an opera with music and words serving a theatrical purpose.
Score and libretto are stage-worthy and crafted with dramatic savvy.
Submitted material shows technical skill in composition for vocal writing and instrumental ensemble.
The creators have a unique voice with the potential to enrich the operatic literature.
The topic and subject matter of the opera are exceptional, relevant, and well suited to a music-theater form.
The composer/librettist team will benefit from hearing their work with a full orchestra and soloists.
The material is performable based on the resources available to the project.
The work contributes to a wider diversity of styles and perspectives sought out for the festival as a whole.

The work may not have had a professional stage premiere; if a stage premiere is anticipated, it must be scheduled for after the VOX workshop dates.

Spatialisation Competition "Espace du Son"

For the performance of acousmatic works

Acousmatic: Pre-recorded work composed in studio, projected on loudspeakers in concert, without intervention of live sound sources.

Spatialised performance of acousmatic pieces deals with directing sounds on multiple loudspeakers spread accross the concert room. Musiques & Recherches' acousmonium has 66 loudpseakers and an analogic console that allows 44 pathes of spatial projections. The performance competition is "manual", i.e. without computer-based system memorising spatial configurations. The performer is hands on the console during the competition. His/her physical presence during the performance is required.

The competition is open to the public. It will take place at the Theatre Marni in Brussels during the XV° international acousmatic festival "L'Espace du Son", which is scheduled for 16 to 19 October 2008.

Registrations and other documents requested in the Competition Regulation must be sent to Musiques & Recherches by post postmarked June 30, 2008, at the latest. There are no registration fees.

Each participant will perform four stereo works, including: an work imposed by the jury, a work of his/her choice, two works drawn the day before his/her performance from a list of pieces proposed to the participant after his/her registration. Personal compositions are not recommanded.

The maximal duration of each work is 10 minutes. The prizes will be awarded at the end of the festival, on 19 OCtober 2008.

We are currently looking at the Short Cuts Film programme for ArtsFest 2008 and are now looking for submissions. Short Cuts is an established and brilliantly attended part of the festival weekend and a great showcasing opportunity. The majority of films shown are normally 5-20 minutes in length but we are happy to consider longer/shorter ones if we feel they will fit in to the programme.

Short Cuts normally takes place in the Library Theatre but we are open to new locations if you have any suggestions. The Library Theatre sees an audience of around 500 over the ArtsFest weekend so if you want to get your work out there...

Call For Scores – Live Elevator Music

The association Levande Musik (Living/Live Music) is requesting submissions for soloist. Levande Musik is a non-profit organization in Gothenburg, Sweden, which arranges around 6-8 concerts a year with a focus on contemporary art music. Pieces must be miniature works with a duration of 30 seconds and intended to be performed in the spectacular outdoor elevator of Gothia Hotel (which offers a magnificent view over Gothenburg) at the Göteborg International Book Fair 25-28 September 2008. The fair is held at the Swedish Exhibition Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. With over 100,000 visitors this is the largest cultural event in the Nordic region.

10 to 12 works will be chosen for performance during three days. The elevator goes fairly straight from entry level to 23th floor, a ride that lasts for exactly 30 seconds. Each day a different musician will perform. All chosen works will be given an equal amount of performances according to a revolving schedule. Due to the small room, please do not use too strong dynamics - mezzoforte at the strongest.

Chosen composers will receive a recording of all performed works in three different versions, one for each instrument.

ELIGIBILITY: Composers of contemporary art music of any age or nationality are eligible. Each composer may submit a maximum of two (2) scores.

The work must not have been previously published or performed.

INSTRUMENTATION: Solo works. Every work must be performable on any of the available instruments; flute, clarinet and soprano saxophone (no doubles). Therefore, instrument specific techniques will not be possible to use, only techniques that are performable on all the instruments.

DEADLINE: August 1, 2008. Results will be announced September 1, 2008.

MANTIS (Manchester Theatre in Sound) is seeking electroacoustic works for performance in a single concert that is part of the larger MANTIS festival [Friday 31 October to Sunday 2 November 2008] at the University of Manchester's Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall.

For this particular concert we are calling for fixed media music and mixed instrumental and electroacoustic works, with a maximum duration of 10 minutes.

Live and interactive works for a broad range of solo instruments (including voice) or small ensembles with electroacoustic elements, or electronics alone, will be considered. Full and detailed technical requirements must be included for these works (see below). Student performers will be sought from The University of Manchester's new music ensemble: Vaganza.

Fixed media works may be stereo or multi-channel.

Only one work per composer will be considered. Work must have been composed after 2003.

The MANTIS sound diffusion system consists of 40+ Genelec loudspeakers and a purpose-built computer-based matrix and control surface at the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama.

The Leonor Hirsch Award celebrates leading edge musical creations that explore the new possibilities opened by the convergence of digital technologies. It invites the submission of mixed media works of electro-acoustic music with a visual component in video.

The Award will be a single, non-divisible award of US$10,000. The Award winner will be selected from three Finalists, whose works will all be performed at a closing concert. The costs of transportation to the city of Buenos Aires will be covered for Finalists to attend the awards ceremony and concert.

Two LGBT Men's Chorus Opportunities

The American Composers Forum is partnering with GALA Choruses Inc. (an international organization serving the GLBT choral movement) to launch a pilot Community Partners program. This program provides grants of $5,000 to two GALA-member choruses to commission a composer to write a piece for each of them.

The choruses selected to participate in this project are the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (Boston, MA) and Una Voce: The Florida Men’s Chorale (St. Petersburg, FL). These choruses were chosen on the potential of the project each proposed to broaden their artistic vision and expand their audiences by engaging new voices and exploring new outreach initiatives.

The Choruses and Commission Details

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Now it its 26th season, the 175-voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, and groundbreaking community outreach. One example of that is BGMC’s history of working with high school choirs and performing benefit concerts to support the network of Gay Straight Alliances that exist in high schools throughout Massachusetts. The piece BGMC will commission will be written specifically for performances in these concerts. It will be a work of moderate difficulty, 8-to-10 minutes in length, scored for TTBB chorus with piano accompaniment and will include a flexible “second chorus” section accessible to student singers that can be efficiently combined with BGMC in minimal rehearsal time. The text will be mutually agreed upon by BGMC and the composer, and is expected to reflect positively on themes of inclusivity and diversity.

Since its debut in December 2002, audiences have heard Una Voce perform in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FL, Fort Worth, TX, Montreal, Canada, and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Future performances include a tour to Paris, France in 2010, as well as their annual concert season in the Tampa Bay, FL area. Una Voce’s Community Partners project will be to commission a composer to write a piece combining their TTBB ensemble and the Symphonic Chorus of the Pinellas County Center for the Arts (an arts magnet high school in St. Petersburg) for a 2010 concert to benefit The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. They envision a work of moderate difficulty, 8-to-10 minutes in length, scored for SATB chorus with piano accompaniment. The composer will also be asked to supply a TTBB version of the work that Una Voce can perform by themselves. The text will be mutually agreed upon by Una Voce and the composer, and is expected to convey an uplifting, positive message of hope and humanity.

New Music Forum is proud to announce the call for scores for the 6th Annual Festival of Contemporary Music. This year the two-concert event will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 15 & 16, 2008 at the Community Music Center in San Francisco. Composers are invited to submit up to two (2) works for consideration in any of the following categories:

Solo: vocal or instrumental
Chamber ensemble: up to eight (8) performers
Two-channel works for digital audio media (on CD)

Submission packets should include:

2 copies of the score (do not send parts now)
2 copes of a recording of the piece, if available, on audio CD or cassette

Your piece(s) will not be considered without the registration form.

Composers must provide performers for the selected works. Setting

Speakers will be placed underwater and the audience will float around ears submerged immersed in sound. Sound travels 4 times faster in water and is heard omniponically. Although we will have 2 channels playing back, the stereo effect is lost and is perceived as a dynamic variation and not as directionality.

The listeners are immersed in sound and perceive sound through their bones as well as through the ears. The sound is heard more intimately.

Criteria

The Call for Proposals will be mainly looking for sounds which depict undersea life/ human interaction with water/ sounds which immerse the listener / abstract electronica/ electro-acoustic sounds.

Duration

Audio work is to be of any duration over 5 minutes and under 20 minutes

The Esoterics announces an international call for a cappella choral scores, as this Pacific Northwest ensemble announces its annual competition for choral composition, POLYPHONOS, from the Greek πολυφωνος, having many voices or manifold in expression.

The Esoterics is dedicated to performing and perpetuating contemporary a cappella choral settings of poetry, philosophy, and spiritual writings from around the world. The purpose of The Esoterics’ POLYPHONOS is to encourage today’s choral composers to broaden the scope of the a cappella choral repertory by setting sacred and poetical texts found beyond the Western classical canon in order to create a repertoire of choral concert music that reflects the universal beauty and power of unaccompanied voices joined in song.

2008-2009 Competition:

Each winning composer will receive a commission from The Esoterics to plan and compose a new choral work that will be premiered by the ensemble in 2009. In addition to this commission, each of the winning composers will receive $1000 US plus airfare and accommodations to attend the Seattle premiere of their commissioned work. There will be up to three POLYPHONOS awards:

The Seattle Pianist Collective is accepting submissions for new works for solo piano. Compositions should be between 3 and 9 minutes in duration, and have some correlation to the program’s theme of synesthesia and the interpretation of color in music. Submissions may be in a variety of styles from classical to avant to jazz.

An honorarium of $500 will be divided between winning submissions. Submission deadline is April 1st, 2008. Notification of selection will be given on or before April 15th. Selected compositions will be performed at a June 1st, 2008 concert at the Seattle Art Museum.

The program currently includes works by: Olivier Messiaen, Alexander Scriabin, Duke Ellington, Richard D. James (a.k.a. Aphex Twin) and others.

For year 2008, the Futura festival is in search of sound works on support of a minimum length of 20 minutes: indeed Futura wishes to cause the creation of medium-length and full-length acousmatic forms and thus to support the forms ambitious, rich, taking the time of their développement. We would like to propose an alternative to the present tendency that is to push the composers to make short musics.

The festival will take place in August, 2008 in Crest (Drôme, France) and The submission : - Only sonic works on tape medium should be submitted (acousmatic, concret, radiophonic art...). Sybarite Chamber Composition Contest

This contest is open to composers of all ages and nationalities. The winner of the 2007 contest will receive a $500 cash award, a performance by the Sybarite Chamber Players on their concert season, and a compact disc recording of the performance.

51st ABA/Ostwald Original Band Composition Award

The American Bandmasters Association will hold the 51st ABA/Ostwald Original Band Composition Award during the winter of 2007 with a November 9, 2007 deadline for submission.

The ABA/Ostwald Award was the first competition for compositions of band music in the United States, and is one of the most prestigious awards in that field. Since 1956 it has stimulated the creation of many important new compositions, thereby enriching the entire spectrum of concert band activity. Because of its continuity, this award has produced more concert band music than any other competition of its kind. Literally thousands of musicians have performed the works of contest winners for their appreciative audiences.

The Contest Committee composed of ABA members, reviews the rules, then screens and judges the entries annually. Entries are unidentified as to composer and are judged entirely on merit, thereby insuring complete artistic integrity.

The winning composition will be performed during the 2008 annual American Bandmasters Association Convention in Miami, Florida.

Pacific Chorale Young Composers Competition

Pacific Chorale invites America’s young composers to participate in a contest designed to encourage the proliferation of America’s choral music. The Chorale is seeking new a cappella works for mixed choral ensembles, 3-5 minutes in length.

We invite choral composers under the age of 35 to apply. All interested applicants must submit a sample of their choral writing by Friday, September 14, 2007. Only choral works will be considered. You are encouraged to explore our web site to learn more about Pacific Chorale’s performance ensembles and their artistic breadth.

Finalists will be selected and notified by Friday, October 12, 2007. Finalists will be asked to write an original work utilizing text of American poetry or an original work based upon a lesser-known American folk song (composers are responsible for securing rights to their text.) All finalist submissions will be due on Friday, January 4, 2008. Finalist submissions must be camera ready and contain a piano reduction. Up to two winners may be selected. Winner(s) will be notified by Friday, January 18, 2008.

Ongoing call for scores

The Sonict Ensemble of the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater invites composers to submit scores for consideration for performance. We can perform works for a varied instrumentation, including any combination of acoustic instruments. We especially encourage submissions for small chamber groups that include saxophone, saxophone ensemble, percussion, and percussion ensemble. We also strongly encourage submission of works that include electronics, either on CD or to be performed via Max/MSP. 2-channel tape works or works for/including video will also be programmed regularly as part the series, both as part of our regular ensemble concerts and on special electronics-only performances.

All submissions not selected for performance will remain in our music library and may be considered for future concerts.

Prizes:

Each year, up to 5 winners will have their work performed and recorded live by one of the participating music conservatories. These winners will also have their work published by C. Alan Publications.

Performance:

Winning compositions will be performed live the following season at one of the participating Music Conservatories.

Originality:

The work must be an original unpublished composition with no prior public performances. Composition entries that have received a public performance will not be accepted and/or will be disqualified.

Deadline:

Scores and application materials must be received on or before March 10, 2007. Results will be announced on April 10, 2007.

Restrictions:

Duration, difficulty, instrument range and other boundaries within the style selection are up to the composer's discretion.

General Rules

Applicants must be born in or between the years:

Age category A – born after 1.01.1997
Age category B – born between 1.01.1993 - 31.12.1996
Age category C – born between 1.01.1989 - 31.12.1992
Age category D – born between 1.01.1977 - 31.12.1988

Younger competitors may apply for a superior age category.

Conditions for entry

Registration in the competition will be made based on: application form, copy of passport, a recent photo and copy of the bank confirmation for the payment of the registration fee of 70 Euro.

The registration fee will be paid into the account RO 91 BACX 0000 0030 0145 6002 of the HVB Tiriac Bank, Izvor Branch – Bd. Libertatii, no.20, Bucharest, for Jeunesses Musicales Romania, Swift Code BACXROBU, and should be sent free of charge to the payee. The entry fee is non-refundable. Drafts are not accepted.

Registration deadline is March 1st, 2007. Confirmation of the applicants' registration in the competition will be made before April 15, 2007.

The participants will bring their own accompanist. A list of first-class accompanists will be provided to those participants who will have requested them on their application form. Their engagement will be made at the participants’ own expense.

Organizers provide lodging for the first 10 registered candidates. Accommodation begins on May 5, 2007 and is ensured for the period the participants remain in competition. For the other participants, the organizers will make hotel reservations upon request, based on special accommodation packages offer.

Upon arrival in Bucharest each competitor should report to the Competition's Secretariat and present a valid passport.

The total amount of the awards is 10.000 Euro: cash (in Romanian currency), instruments or scholarships. The prize-winners will have priority in being included in the programmes organized by Jeunesses Musicales Romania, both nationally and abroad.

All performers will receive participation diplomas. Prizes will be awarded by a Jury whose members are well known personalities of the musical world. The Jury will evaluate both the technical aspect and the expressive quality of the interpretation. If necessary, the competitors may be asked by the Jury members to perform only excerpts from some works. All the decisions of the Jury are final and non-appealable.

Each award-winner must receive his or her prize personally. The concerts will be broadcast by the Broadcasting Corporation or recorded for later transmission. A live or deferred broadcast by other Romanian or foreign Broadcasting Corporations is possible, as well as a complete or partial re-broadcast of the concerts. By applying to take part in the competition, the applicants give their implied consent for this recording as well as for its transmission under the conditions mentioned above. The prizewinners have no claim to additional fees.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF COMPETITION

Musica e Arte Cultural Association announces the “Musica e Arte Composition Contest - 3rd Edition”

Musica e Arte Composition Contest, is open to students attending European Music Conservatories and European University Music Departments and to students graduated, not before the 2004/2005 Academic Year, from the same institutions.

There is not any age or nationality limitation.

Each Composer can submit one score only to the Contest.

The application to the Contest is completely FREE.

The Contest's winner will receive Euros 1,000 (one thousand) and a copy of the "Sibelius" Software.
In case of ex-aequo the money award will be shared among the winners.

The 3rd edition of the Contest is dedicated to unpublished scores, never performed and never awarded any prize for PIANO and CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

The maximum timing is ten (10) minutes.

Since the premiere of a new composition is a moment of great responsibility, the Composers selected as finalists will be invited to the rehearsals as to work-out, with the Conductor, the best execution.

All travel expenses are responsibility of the finalists to the Contest. The rehearsals will take place in ROME, Italy.

FOURTH INTERNATIONAL JURGENSON COMPETITION
FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS
(Moscow, 15 February - 15 April 2007)

The Fourth International Jurgenson Competition for young composers has been organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, by the Centre for Contemporary Music (Moscow) and by the Jurgenson Charity Foundation. The Chairman of the jury will be Vladimir Tarnopolsky.

The competition invites submissions in the following categories:

Compositions for soloist ensembles or for voice and soloists (6-16 musicians in both cases)
String quartet
Compositions for marimba or for percussion ensemble (up to 6 musicians)

The duration of compositions may not exceed 15 minutes.

Instruments in scores for percussion ensemble must be grouped by performers.

The competition will have two rounds. 10 participants will be admitted to the second round after adjudication of scores. Awards will be conferred after the performance of compositions by soloists from the Studio for New Music (Moscow) and Mark Pekarsky's percussion ensemble.

The competition will only accept compositions that are unpublished, and which have not been performed publicly. The competition is not open to composers born earlier than 1 June 1977.

The application package must be postmarked no later than 1 February 2007. It should contain the following:

2 copies of the score (if your score is selected for a final reading, parts must be sent by March 30). A password should be clearly written on the manuscript submitted; the applicant's name shall not appear on the manuscript.
A complete signed application form in English or Russian (Apllication Form).
2 photos of the applicant.

Applicant may not submit compositions in more than two categories.

Eligibility:

Any composer, regardless of age or nationality.

Award:

Cash award of $1000 and a performance by the University of Illinois New Music Ensemble in the fall of 2006 at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Additional awards of $500 and $250 plus performances may be given at the discretion of the judges.

Medium:

Full scores of any style or aesthetic direction for one to ten performers (including vocalists) may be submitted. Works for tape, electronics and/or mixed media with or without instruments/voices are eligible.

Duration:

20 minutes maximum

Limit:

One entry per composer

Entry fee:

A non-refundable entry fee of fifteen U.S. dollars ($15.00) in the form of a check must be included with each submission. All checks must be payable to the University of Illinois, and must either be an international money order or drawn on a U.S. bank.

Anonymous: Submission:

The composer's name must not appear on the score itself or on any item. (tape, CD, etc.) submitted as supplement to the application. A sealed envelope must accompany the score and contain the composer's name, address, telephone number/e-mail (if applicable) and a brief biographical sketch. If a recording of the work is available, it should accompany the score and be identified only by the title of the composition.

Return of Materials:

Scores will not be returned unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope of the proper size is enclosed.

A panel of judges consisting of University of Illinois music composition faculty members will select the winning composition. The winning composer is expected to attend the award concert/reception and will be responsible for their transportation costs (the competition will provide a stipend for lodging). The winning composer will assume full responsibility for providing adequate performance materials upon request.

The deadline for the next competition is February 24, 2006 (postmark deadline)
