CALL FOR SCORES: Mahler-Composition Competition 2010/11

In cooperation with the International Gustav Mahler Society, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (RSO) and the Vienna Konzerthaus the Austrian Composer Society initiates an international composition competition on the occasion of the upcoming Gustav Mahler years 2010/11 (his 150th birthday, 100th anniversary of his death) and invites the composers of the 21st century without restriction of age to hand in their works for Orchestra.

Maximum instrumentation: 3/3/3/3, 4/4/3/1, 1 Kettledrum, 3 Percussion, 1 Harp, 14/12/10/8/6 (woodwind instruments incl. additional instruments)

Deadline: 30 September 2010

Duration: max. 15 min

Premiere of the winning piece: 25 March 2011 at the Vienna Konzerthaus in the context of an RSO concert with its chief conductor Cornelius Meister. Those orchestral pieces awarded second and third will be produced by the ORF radio.

Competitions / Awards

:

An international jury will award three prizes. The selected works of this competition shall be staged and heard in as many "Mahler-cities" as possible together with selected examples from Gustav Mahler's oeuvre. For the fact that the winning pieces will be premiered by ensembles and artists of highest internationally reputation such as Marijan Lipovsek or the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (RSO) no prize money will be awarded.

Terms of participation:

No specific reference to Gustav Mahler is demanded, however the submitted works should be clearly inspired by Mahler's modernity and his far reaching influence on the musical development in the 20th century and they should be in the best meaning innovative and forward-looking. The submission of one or more work(s) needs to be done anonymously in such a way that the author's name does not appear on the score material, but can be retrieved from a sealed envelope incl. his/her name, address, phone number and email address as well as his/her artistic curriculum vitae (and a photo). Both the submitted work as well as the connected envelope should be provided with an identical password.
