Receipt Deadline: May 1, 2003 The international music school/festival Upbeat-Hvar presents a composition competition for solo violin, solo viola, or solo cello pieces. The competition seeks short pieces (maximum 4 minutes) for any of these unaccompanied instruments. The winning pieces will be performed as part of instrumental competitions held at the festival. There will be two levels in the instrumental competitions: musicians up to age 20 and musicians 20 and older. Therefore, six separate types of pieces are sought (two for each instrument), and awards will be offered for the top prize in each category: a full scholarship for tuition at the Upbeat-Hvar International summer school/festival in 2004, a CD recording of the pieces, and performances at the Dubrovnik Festival. The competition is open to composers of any age and nationality. Composers must also submit a one-page bio and may submit more than one piece.
